Something from Almost Nothing

Reproduce what already existed, deepen it with tools its origin never had.

Nothing is built from nothing. Every system you ship reproduces a concept that already existed somewhere, near or far. What makes it new is a tool its origin never had. This book turns that into a method you can run on your own work.

The method on one page

Reproduce, then deepen. Five moves to get there.

1 · Reduce

Strip the system to its box: what goes in, what comes out, what it throws off.

2 · Name the tool gap

Name the tool your concept's origin never had, or admit you copied.

3 · Deepen

Push the concept with that tool. The tool is the engine; the concept is the seed.

4 · Break what resists

Dead constraint, unwritten knowledge or mistake? Break the first, carry the second, fix the third.

5 · Stress

Load the result until it shows which part of the deepening was wrong, then go back.

“What is it, really?”“What can I do that they couldn't?”
